Education in St. Columba’s is fully enhanced by the world of IT
Each classroom is fitted with state of the art interactive whiteboards, projectors, laptops and a class computer. Recently, St. Columba’s received a selection of iPads which the students will use to develop their love of learning. Every class is allocated a session in the school’s computer room which has 26 PCs. These sessions allow the children to develop their IT skills from learning to draw shapes using paint and drawing applications in Junior Infants, learn typing skills in 1st &2nd Class, develop MS Word and Powerpoint skills in 3rd class, interact internationally using Mathletics in 4th Class to introducing programming skills using Scratch in 5th and 6th Class as well as an spending time learning about animation creation using the software package HUE Animation. From its website, we learn that HUE Animation Studio contains everything that a budding animator needs to learn to create stop motion animation videos. The animation software has been specifically designed for educational use, with a user friendly, fully-featured interface
In the very near future, St. Columba’s will be the home to a new collection of Apple Macs so that pupils will become competent users of both PCs and Apple Macs during their time in our school.
In most recent times, St. Columba’s joined the CoderDojo community. CoderDojo is a global movement of free, volunteer-led, community based programming clubs for young people. At a Dojo, young people, between 7 and 17, learn how to code, develop websites, apps, programs, games and explore technology in an informal and creative environment. This is a new initiative within St. Columba’s and will be fully up and running in early 2016.
